Sura is a benchmark film for Vijay, as he celebrates his golden jubilee in the only soil he can shine in. The story has been told before (umpteen amount of times) - a tale of a fisherman, a do-gooder to his fisherman community, head decision maker of the community, who is crossed by a powerful politician to lose all and then regain more.

This dimwitted film is passé for even hardcore fans. On the onset of the shoot there was so much of media glare that set the expectation meter scaling way up and Sura was surely a sought after and anticipated film of the season. Sun Pictures(market leader) decided to back the project and distribute it, and this added to the hype further.

There are lapses in every department, starting from the production, direction, music, choreography, stunts and even comedy. Vijay's team should guess how long they would get away with this kind of fooling the audience.

Rumour has it that once director Gautham Menon had approached Vijay for a film, however this was never done because Vijay had asked him to script a movie around the storyline of his previous films. When you have all Vijay movies turning out in a particular way, you would want to consider the above more than just a rumour.

The direction of SA Rajkumar is clueless and is directionless.

The story revolves around a fishermen village. Although special effects have been used to create the village sets, the core set of the village seems so fake. The shots are also inconsistent.

The editing looks haphazard; certain scenes are so poorly edited that even a layman could tell.

The dances are again repeats of Vijay’s previous films even the famous "hand on bottom" rip-off from Pokiri the leg sequence from ATM. The elastic and acrobat dance caught a fancy in Pradhu Deva's times but looks like it should be rested - it’s an overdose.

Mani Ratnam's only film with Rajinikanth 'Thalapathi' was based on the Duriyodhana – Karna episode in Mahabharatha. The character of Shakuntala was very evident in the female lead of 'Roja' and now Mani Ratnam seems to be inspired with Ramanyana for his next project that'll have two versions – Hindi and Tamil.

For the Hindi version the characters based on Rama and Seetha will be played by real life couple Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. Vikram would play the character based on Ravana.

However, for the Tamil version Vikram would replace Abhishek Bachchan and would pair up with Aishwarya Rai. Prithiviraj would play the baddie in this version.

Plying two different characters at one go would be something of a 'terrific exercise' in acting and would probably do a world of good for Vikram who is already a National Award winning actor.

'I am thrilled to be part of this film and to work with Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. I know them very well and we are good friends' said Vikram. Incidentally Vikram was introduced to filmdom by Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited in 1990.

A Sun Pictures release and Ilayathalapathy Vijay's 50th film, Sura, is likely to be a big summer release in April. The film, directed by SP Rajakumar, has Tamannaah as the leading lady.

It has music by Mani Sharma and Ekambaram as cameraman. The shoot of the film, produced by Sangli Murugan, is almost complete with just one song remaining.

The film promises to be a complete family entertainer with all mass elements associated with a typical Vijay film.

Though it has been rumored that the film Sura which has Vijay in the lead is the remake of the Malayalam film Chotta Mumbai, the fact is that director S P Rajkumar has taken only one portion for the inspiration touch. Thamanna dons the role of a bubbly college girl and is the love interest of Vijay. It is guaranteed that Vijay will be rocking in the dance sequences. There are racy stunt scenes where Vijay fights with four villains which will bring you to the edge of your seat. The Telugu Magadheera villain poses a big challenge for Vijay in Sura. There are strong dialogues in this film which might provoke the politicians. Because of this these dialogues are being reshot. There will be no dearth for sensations.

OK. Now what is the story of Sura. Vijay like the MGR in Padagotti gets friendly with fishermen folks and begins his game. He is like a God to the fishing hamlets. He is fondly called Sura. When all are happy comes a silent tsunami in the form of smuggler big wig like Velu Naiker in Nayagan. He plans to curb the fishing hamlet lands in order to run his business smoothly. He tries to cheat the poor fishermen folk by saying that a big factory is going to come up in that area and promises to give lands in compensation. The news goes to Sura that these poor fishermen have been cheated. Now Vijay starts the hunting and the fisherman gets their justice, peace and happiness.

Since most of the story is happening in the sea, the shooting of the film took place in Pondicherry, Kerala and Thoothukudi. Nan Pura Illaada Sura ( I am not a dove but I am a shark) is the punch dialogue of Vijay in this film. Most of the stunt scenes have been shot in mid sea and in spite of his sea sickness, Vijay has excelled in the stunts scenes. As usual Vaali has penned the lyrics for the opening song and Kabilan has written a lyric which depicts Vijay’s personality and his ideals.

Movie Overview

Thamizh (Vijay) is a youth with a mission. A mafia gang controlled remotely by international don Ali Bhai (Prakash Raj) operates with impunity. Thamizh is left with no option but to "fight evil with evil". He joins the gang on his own terms in order to eliminate them. His love interest Shruthi (Asin) works as an instructor at an aerobic centre. A lecherous police cop, who is on the pay rolls of the mafia, sets his eyes on father-less Shruthi and subjects her mother to unspeakable torture. This brings Shruthi and Thamizh closer. However, for Shruthi, Thamizh remains enigmatic and his association with the marauding goons puzzles her. Ali Bhai's men are defeated in their every move by Thamizh with indomitable courage and ingenuity. The don himself returns from abroad and launches a witch-hunt for Thamizh who strikes back with all ferocity.

Movie Overview

The film's synopsis isn't substantial as it offers reminiscences of Vijay previous films 'Tirupatchi', 'Bhagavathy' and few of that sort. Babu Sivan seems to have collected the scenes of other films made by his mentors Dharani and Perarasu. Set in backdrops of Tuticorin, Ravi (Vijay) is a happy-go-lucky youngster, who adores Devraj IPS as his role model and aspires to be a cop like him. But then, he has passed his 12th Std exams even after 3 attempts. Luckily, he's done with the pending subjects with successful grade on the next attempt and flees to Chennai to join a college and fulfill his dream. Vividly inspired by Devraj IPS, Ravi earns his livelihood by driving auto after his college hours. He is still dreaming about his dream angel Susheela (Anushka) he met her over the train while journeying from Tuticorin to Chennai and later meets her again. Everything is fine for Ravi until he comes across a troublesome Chella, son a roughneck Vedanayagam (Salim Ghosh), who has control over entire Chennai. Clashes do takes place between Ravi and the baddies and there we have a shocking fact about Devraj IPS, who has lost his career, eyesight and his family because of Vedanayagam. Now, Ravi vows to overthrow the realms of baddies and starts striking with his fists of actions that move in a much cliched way.

Mani Rathnam's take on the real-life rivalry between M.G. Ramachandran and Karunanidhi. The movie might not be of interest and significance by the audience who aren't familiar with the political history of Tamilnadu. Before watching this piece, the viewer needs some knowledge about the relationships and friendships of Ex-CMs of Tamilnadu. Mohanlal, Prakashraj and Aishwarya Rai are the main leads in this movie. Lal and Prakash have done their best. However talented actresses like Tabu and Revathi appear in few scenes and don't have much scope to show their acting skills. But this is one movie they would not have regretted acting in. The art direction, camera-work and costume design are excellent. A must watch, classic.
