James Cameron's recent opus, Avatar, is considered to be the new revolution in film and cinematic technology. However, in the eyes of many fans, James Cameron may never top his action masterpiece Terminator 2. While he was placed on the map well before this with films like Aliens, it wasn't until Terminator 2 that he was really given the freedom to create something that broke all barriers of what had come before him. It is, without a doubt, one of the all time must download movies.
Terminator 2 is always remembered as one of the most technologically innovative films ever made, but with Cameron, the special effects are only there to tell the story, not the other way around. The effects are always in service to the story, even with Avatar, which they say they're getting ready to release in "4D" whatever the heck that means.
If for some reason you haven't seen it yet... Welcome to the 21st Century! Come out from under that rock/the iceberg you've been frozen in for decades. We'll go ahead and quickly describe the premise: Robots take over the world, there's a human resistance to their rule. They send a robot back to kill the human resistance leader in his teens, the adult resistance leader sends another robot back to serve as a bodyguard. That's as complicated as it gets. It's actually pretty straight forward from there.
T2 really does take some incredible steps in terms of special effects, though. The T-1000 is one of the all time great special effects creations in film history. Twenty years later, it still stands as one of the most impressive characters ever created with CGI, every bit as believable as Gollum or Doctor Manhattan. A lot of new technology was developed for the film, and that technology was coupled with artistry to create a really cool arsenal of effects.
The movie has a kind of purity to it in that, while the background is fairly complicated, the movie is not. The movie is driven purely on emotion and strong storytelling. You have the classic tale of the robot who becomes humanized and the heroes beating the bad guys. From there it's all about the humanity of the characters, what they think and feel, even if there is some heady, high sci-fi stuff in there, it's all about the people in the end.
If you haven't seen it... We don't know what to tell you. If you have, it's a good time to watch it again. It's one of those rare action movies that actually has enough emotional depth that it gets better with each viewing.
Even if you have seen it, it's been about twenty years since it was released and now they keep pumping out all these sequels, the television series and so on, and... None of this stuff is as good as T2 was in the first place, so it may be high time for a refresher course so that everyone can try to remember that Terminator was about characters, not heady, over complicated plotlines.
It's a classic, not just of the action or sci fi genres, it's just plain a classic, period, and it's always a good time to watch T2 again.
